Kai Pretto, M.A., CCC-SLP, an Autistic speech-language pathologist and researcher, combines their specialised knowledge as a practitioner and researcher with both clinical and lived experience to provide a more nuanced understanding of the function of echolalia in Autistic and otherwise neurodivergent communication. They will explore how echolalia—a form of vocalization that many still see as “non-functional”—taps into ALL functions of language: Requesting; Protesting & Rejecting; Commenting & Sharing Observations; Asking & Answering Questions; Expressing Feelings & Emotional States; and Social Routine & Connection. They will further discuss the intersection of echolalia with Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) and how different stages of gestalts require different levels of communication partner engagement and support. Additionally, they will provide insight into the functions of echolalia as a “social glue” and an important form of coregulation for Autistic and otherwise neurodivergent communicators of all ages and communication abilities.
