Parenting an autistic adolescent

Parents of adolescents who receive an autism diagnosis later in development often feel overwhelmed, unsure of where to turn or how best to move forward. With the invaluable input of the Autism House community and funding from Unity for Autism, we are developing a series of capsules designed to empower parents by deepening their understanding of their adolescent’s inner experiences, as well as the everyday challenges they may face.

This series of capsules is designed to bridge the gap between diagnosis and day-to-day support, offering clear, compassionate insight into what late-diagnosed adolescents may be navigating in their everyday lives—emotionally, socially, and cognitively—and helping parents respond with greater understanding and confidence.

The series aims to equip families with practical strategies, fresh perspectives, and empathetic approaches that can be applied in real-life situations, fostering trust, reducing conflict, and supporting emotional well-being.

Ultimately, these capsules seek to help parents become confident advocates for their teens—within the home, at school, and in the broader community—while nurturing a relationship grounded in respect, validation, and mutual understanding. By supporting parents, we strengthen the environments in which autistic adolescents can thrive as they come to better understand themselves.
